It is perfectly normal for a person to feel blue every once in a while. Feeling sad is a normal part of life and does not necessarily mean a person is clinically depressed. However, when those feelings of sadness are accompanied by feelings of hopelessness and guilt, a person could be suffering from clinical depression.

Sometimes, it is surprising to find someone has depression. Maybe they never acted like they were depressed, but depression is a condition that is largely mental, and people can become good at hiding their feelings. What is Depression?

Clinical depression, or Major Depressive Disorder, is a mood disorder that affects more than 16.1 million Americans over the age of 18. They often have a hard time getting out of bed or have insomnia; they lose motivation to do anything, like taking care of themselves or partaking in activities they once enjoyed; and they struggle with feelings of sadness, worthlessness, and guilt. Depression can be caused by traumatic life events, chemical imbalances, or genetics, so people can be depressed without a clear cause, even when everything in their life is going well. Some people only experience one depressive episode in their life, but many others have depressive episodes many times in their lives.

Signs of Depression

Major Depressive Disorder goes beyond just being sad, and to be diagnosed, a person must experience symptoms almost all day, most days for at least two weeks. Signs and symptoms of depression include:

  • Sadness
  • Feelings of emptiness, worthlessness, or guilt
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia
  • Changes in eating habits leading to changes in weight
  • Moving or talking slowly
  • Withdrawing from friendships/relationships
  • Loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed
  • Irritability, even over small things
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Restlessness
  • Fatigue
  • Suicidal ideation

If left untreated, a depressed person may get to the point of attempting suicide, so it is important to get help. Treatments for depression include medication, therapy, or a combination of both. There are several types of medications used for the treatment of depression: SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, and others. These medicines help regulate brain chemistry and relieve symptoms, but it is still recommended that people with depression see a therapist. Therapy can help sufferers of depression learn how to: deal with stress better, identify and replace negative beliefs, develop new coping mechanisms, and much more. These new skills help people cope with things that happen in their life and reduce the chance they will have another depressive episode.

Depression is a condition that can affect any person, regardless of background or status. It is often characterized by extreme feelings of sadness, hopelessness, worthlessness, and guilt. These thoughts and feelings can lead a person to consider or even attempt suicide. Fortunately, depression is treatable through medication, therapy, or both. It is important for someone who is suffering from depression to consult with a mental health professional, so they can help them regain their life.
